It is my honour to be the President in this, the 25th Anniversary year of the establishment of the International Family Day Care Organisation, since the fi rst Conference in Wales in 1987. Refl ecting on a quarter century of linking family childcare across the world, the theme of the conference is celebratory –“Celebrating Quality Family Childcare”IFDCO is a worldwide network of people involved as providers, researchers, advocates and support workers who wish to promote family childcare and particularly to promote research, so as to underpin and promote quality care and evidencebased best practice. Communication has been a very diffi cult task for those who worked on the International Executive

Committee through the years and whom I would like to honour and thank for their generous commitment. My task has been made considerably easier by e-communication.

I would particularly like to thank those national and state family childcare organisations in the UK, Europe, USA, Australia and New Zealand who afforded me and members of the International Executive Committee the opportunity to promote IFDCO at their conferences and in their publications.

From the formation of the National Childminding Association of Ireland, now Childminding Ireland, membership of IFDCO has been an important inspiration and source of information. Attending the IFDCO International meetings and conferences, generously hosted by national organisations in the UK, Europe, America, Australia and New Zealand brought home, (literally), the message that worldwide family childcare is the largest sub-sector and the family home has the capacity to provide the highest quality childcare – when the FCC Provider (or the Childminder in UK and Irish terminology,) has the diverse qualities and skills required and is supported with training and networking opportunities.

I welcome you to Ireland to attend this focussed conference and also thank those diverse experts who will present keynote addresses and seminars.

The International Day of Families is observed on the 15th of May every year. The Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 with resolution A/RES/47/237 and reflects the importance the international community attaches to families. The International Day provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families.

The International Day of Families has inspired a series of awareness-raising events, including national family days. In many countries, that day provides an opportunity to highlight different areas of interest and importance to families. Activities include workshops and conferences, radio and television programmes, newspaper articles and cultural programmes highlighting relevant themes.

The central goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development focus on ending poverty, promoting shared economic prosperity, social development and people’s well-being while  protecting the environment. Families remain at the centre of social life ensuring the well-being of their members, educating and socializing children and youth and caring for young and old.

In particular, family-oriented policies can contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals 1 to 5 relating to doing away with poverty and hunger; ensuring healthy lives and promoting of well-being for all ages; ensuring educational opportunities throughout the lifespan and achieving gender equality.

Every year on May 15, is the international day for the family. In 1993, the United Nations general assembly resolution (A/RES / 47/237) announced in memory of the day, it reflects the international community about the importance of family. The international day provides an opportunity to promote awareness about family problems, increase the social, economic and demographic impact on family.

The United Nations international family day inspired a series of activities, raise awareness including family day across the country. In many countries, has a stake in that day aims to emphasize on family and significance in the field of all kinds of opportunities. Activities include workshops and meeting on the theme, radio and TV programs, newspapers, monographs and literature and art show.

2015 international family day celebration activities to promote family gender equality and children's rights, and emphasized through fair family law framework and a variety of programs intervention to prevent domestic violence.

The annual observance(慣例) of the International Day of Families reflects the importance the international community attaches to families and is an opportunity to demonstrate(證明) support to families. Governments, non-governmental organizations, educational institutions and individuals are encouraged to organize observances of the Day to raise awareness of issues relating to families and increase the knowledge of the social, economic and demographic(人口學的) processes affecting families. Such observances can promote a better understanding of the functions, strengths and needs of families.
