Ruby Bridges shares information about the first Black child to attend an all-white elementary school in New Orleans, Louisiana. Despite protests and threats, Ruby continued going to school. Her courage opened the way for other Black children to attend schools previously closed to them. Use this inspiring book to also teach emergent readers about author's purpose and possessive nouns.

Black children and white children had to go to different schools.
Many people worked to make Southern schools follow the United States law.
