RAZ按難度分為27個級別，AA—C這4個級別對應幼兒園階段; D—J這7個級別對應美國小學一年級;K—P這6個級別對應美國小學二年級;Q—T這4個級別對應美國小學三年級;U—W這3個級別對應美國小學四年級;X—Z對應美國小學五六年級(相當于國內高中畢業)。

而且它的區分度不是簡單地以年齡為標準，還包括認字量、語義難度、藝術復雜性等。

到了k級別，每本書單詞量上升到了180-270詞，重復性的語句基本消失了，句與句之間的邏輯關系強，需要小孩能理解才能讀下去。內容上已經跟國內的兒童小故事類書籍差不多了。
