ThurgoodMarshallwasbornin1908inBaltimore,Maryland.HewasAfricanAmerican, and his grandfather was a formerslave.By the time Thurgood was born, it wasagainst the law to own slaves. Thurgood grewup with both black and white neighbors, but inmany states, people weresegregated.

In theSouth,black people were not allowedto eat in many restaurants that served whitepeople. They were not allowed to sit in thesame train cars as white people.

Black children in the South were not allowed to go to school with white children.They couldn't even drink from the same water fountains.

Yet theSupreme Court一the highest courtin the land一had made segregation legal. Itdecided that those restaurants, trains, schools,parks, and hotels were ''separate but equal.〃

瑟古德馬歇爾 1908 年出生于馬里蘭州巴爾的摩。他是非裔美國人，他的祖父曾是奴隸。瑟古德出生時(shí)，擁有奴隸是違法的。 瑟古德與黑人和白人鄰居一起長大，但在許多州，人們被隔離。

RAZ有嚴(yán)密的分級體系：根據(jù)全文詞匯數(shù)、高頻詞詞匯數(shù)與比例、低頻詞詞匯數(shù)與比例、句子長度、句子復(fù)雜度、句式、插圖信息量、思想深度、主題等多個(gè)角度，將整個(gè)閱讀體系分為aa，A-Z共27個(gè)級別。

RAZ旨在幫助孩子找到適合孩子水平的級別，通過在同一級別下的大量閱讀逐步提高孩子的閱讀能力。

RAZ按難度分為27個(gè)級別，AA—C這4個(gè)級別對應(yīng)幼兒園階段; D—J這7個(gè)級別對應(yīng)美國小學(xué)一年級;K—P這6個(gè)級別對應(yīng)美國小學(xué)二年級;Q—T這4個(gè)級別對應(yīng)美國小學(xué)三年級;U—W這3個(gè)級別對應(yīng)美國小學(xué)四年級;X—Z對應(yīng)美國小學(xué)五六年級(相當(dāng)于國內(nèi)高中畢業(yè))。

P級已經(jīng)達(dá)到初中畢業(yè)的水平，詞匯量超過600個(gè)，語法上涉及國內(nèi)初中重要的所有語法(各種時(shí)態(tài)，靈活的副詞和形容詞，形象的動(dòng)詞詞組，定語從句，賓語從句，狀語從句等)。
